Within Nigeria's North-East geopolitical zone, Adamawa state is bordered to the northwest by Borno, to the west by Gombe for 95 km, and to the southwest by Taraba for approximately 366 km. Its eastern border forms part of the national border with Cameroon, which spans the Atlantica Mountains for approximately 712 km. It derives its name from the former Adamawa emirate, whose capital city is Yola, which also serves as the capital of Adamawa state.
