Nigeria's southern Delta state. State of Edo to the north, State of Anambra to the east, State of Rivers to the southeast, State of Bayelsa to the south, State of the Bight of Benin of the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and State of Ondo to the northwest form its borders. The lower course and delta of the Niger River encircle the state on the east and south. In 1991, the southern part of the old Bendel State was divided to establish Delta. The state capital is at Asaba, which is on the Niger River.
In the delta of the Niger River, the majority of the state is located at a height of under 500 feet (150 meters). In the delta, mangrove swamps prevail, merging to the north with freshwater wetlands.
